In honor of Earth Day, our April films highlight people who have devoted their lives to the environment, or otherwise those whose worldview is shaped by their relationship to it. These international stories diverge in style, genre, and subject matter -- from the intimate bond between one family and a baby elephant, to a woman whose depression mirrors the approach of a planet hurtling towards Earth, to the trials and tribulations of a young girl standing at the forefront of the fight for climate awareness -- however they all share in their raw portrayals of the strong tether between humans and the environment …

The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith: Never Rarely Sometimes Always Q&A - Eliza Hittman
Watching this month’s films, we can begin to see the scope of women’s health and healthcare as it is portrayed on-screen. From darkly comedic satires to documentaries firmly planted in truth, each filmmaker sheds a different light on the topic, providing a new “way in” by prompting a unique emotional response. With access to a legal and safe abortion at the center of the playlist, we see five films with five entirely unique perspectives on the subject. It’s an interesting exercise in seeing “voice” in writing and filmmaking, as it leads us to question how filmmakers develop unique, specific stories in response to global issues. This interview with Eliza Hittman, director of Never Rarely Sometimes Always, provides insight into her own creative process, the reason why she had to tell the story, and what it was like to bring her script to life. With their first features, each of these directors struck audiences with their unique perspective, original cinematic style, and thoughtful execution. Through our conversation series, we sit down with women in all areas of the film industry to examine inspirations, motivations, and what it really takes to bring amazing stories to the screen.
