It’s estimated that anywhere between 30% and 70% of women throughout the world face physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetimes (unwomen.org). Legal and social activism are vital to establishing and protecting women’s rights. We made this playlist with the hope to help shed light on this violence in some of its many forms, and to recognize those fighting tirelessly to bring it to an end.

 

SEEING ALLRED

SAVING FACE

Despite their archaic nature, acid attacks are not an uncommon means of punishing “bad women" in Pakistan. This film follows medical and legal attempts to fight this violent and harmful practice, which has left many permanently disfigured.

 
 

THE TESTIMONY

In Democratic Republic of the Congo, defeated Congolese soldiers systematically raped hundreds, if not thousands, of their own country’s citizens. After intense international outrage, one of the largest rape trials in history occurred, allowing 56 survivors to boldly present their testimonies in front of their assailants -- the Minova Trial.

HOOLIGAN SPARROW

Activist Ye Haiyan refused to sit idly by after an elementary school principal sexually abused six young girls. Her protests resulted in threats from local governments and the Chinese secret police.
