JANUARY PLAYLIST:
The Films that Made 2022

A look back at the past year in film reveals a striking quantity of excellent women-made and/or led features. For us, what made 2022 particularly impressive is the diversity of these stories not solely in gender representation, but also in race, nationality, genre, tone, subject matter, and time period. From the hypnotic nostalgia of Aftersun, to the quietly devastating Holocaust documentary Three Minutes: A Lengthening, to the eccentric and dazzling mother/daughter story Everything Everywhere All At Once, this year has seen the impact of women in front of and behind the camera, especially at a mainstream level. Each of these commercially successful and critically-acclaimed features are significant as works of art - but as a collection, they reveal a kaleidoscope of female-driven stories at the center of today’s film industry. Many of 2022’s most beloved films fall under this category, and from our new-year vantage point of refreshing, exciting and courageous storytelling, we’re taking the opportunity to highlight our favorites.
